What the Ladder tab is for
A ladder season's players are on the Players tab. Everything else happens here: the board, the challenges, the results, and the organisers' corrections. The rules the ladder runs on are set once for the league, in League settings ▸ Ladder rules.
The board is never edited directly. Every game, forfeit and organiser move is kept, in order, and the board is rebuilt from them after each change. A corrected result or a struck-off game therefore moves everyone exactly as if it had always gone that way.
The line at the top counts who is on the board, who is waiting to play in, and the open challenges, with the close date, the challenge range and who enters results.
Needs you
Shown when something is waiting for an organiser:
| Waiting | What it is |
|---|---|
| Result waiting to be confirmed | A player entered a result under Players submit. Approve makes it count; Correct result changes it first. |
| Waiting for an organiser | A player recorded a game that breaks a ladder rule. Approve it, correct it, or strike it off. |
| Past its deadline | A challenge not played in time on a ladder set to Organisers decide. |
| Flagged | A player flagged a result. The result stands until changed. Clear the flag leaves it as it is. |
The organiser menu on a challenge
Organiser ▾ on any challenge offers what applies to it:
- Forfeit to the challenger — counted as their win.
- Award it to the player challenged — counted as their win.
- Reopen with a new deadline — back to accepted, with the play-by date reset.
- Let it lapse — closed; nobody moves.
- Strike it off — as if it had never happened. A result that counted is removed and the board rebuilt.
- Correct the result — change the scores, winner or date of a result that counted.
Record a game
For a ladder game arranged without a challenge in the tool — agreed at the club, or on the phone. Pick the two players, enter the scores or Winner only, and the date played. It counts as a challenge game does, with the lower-placed player treated as the challenger.
Challenge for a player
Makes a challenge on a player's behalf, for challenges made by phone or at the club. The player challenged is emailed as though the challenger had made it. Allow it even if it breaks a ladder rule skips the range, open-challenge and away checks.
Reorder the ladder
Sets the whole order at once. Shown as Set the starting order on a ladder that starts everyone in an order and has no order yet.
| Button | Order |
|---|---|
| By dGrade | Every player, highest dGrade first. |
| Random | Every player, drawn at random. |
| As it stands | The players on the board, in their places. |
The arrows move one player up or down. Save the order puts everyone listed on the board in that order. Games played afterwards build on it; games before it stay in the history but no longer decide the order. It appears under Results and moves as The organisers set the order, with Undo.
Play-off
Shown when the ladder rules set a play-off. Before it is drawn, the card lists who would qualify as the ladder stands, in seed order. Draw the play-off builds the bracket from that order (1st v last qualifier) — once the ladder has closed, or earlier if needed. Once drawn, it is scored on Play-off scoring, which appears in the rail. Redraw from the ladder now is offered only while no play-off game has a result.
One player's menu
⋯ at the end of a player's row:
- Move to a place… — puts them at a place; everyone from there down moves down one. For a player not yet on the board: Put on the ladder at a place….
- Add or take points… — points ladders only, in place of the moves above. A number with a minus takes points away; the reason is shown under Results and moves.
- Drop one place and Move to the bottom.
- Take off the ladder — everyone below moves up one. Their games stand.
- Mark away until… / Mark as back — away players cannot be challenged and do not lose places for inactivity.
- Open their ladder page ↗ — opens the player's own page in a new tab, exactly as they see it: accept or decline, enter a result, withdraw a challenge, mark themselves away. Anything done there counts as done by the player.
- Copy their own link and Email them their link — see below.
Clicking a player's name on the board opens their record on Everyone in the league in a new tab. A player with no record (test players) gets their Email and phone… in the menu instead.
Each move is recorded with Undo under Results and moves.
Players' own links
Every player has their own ladder page, reached by a private link. It needs no sign-in: the player sees the ladder with their own panel on top — their place, their open challenges, and a Challenge button that lists who they can challenge, and buttons to accept, decline, enter a result, confirm, flag, record a game and mark themselves away.
Email every player their link sends each player their link. Every ladder email a player receives carries the same link. A player whose account is linked to their entry sees the same panel on the public page when signed in.
A player with no email address on file receives nothing; Copy their own link gives the link to pass on another way. Email them their link says in the menu whether it was sent or the player has no email address. If the browser does not allow copying, Copy their own link shows the link in the menu to copy by hand.
Add email and phone… (or Email and phone… once there is one) sets the address the ladder's emails go to and a phone number. For a player with a record on the league's People page it is saved on that record, so every season uses it; Their record ↗ opens it. A test player has no record, and the contacts are kept on their entry.
On the board, a challenge waiting for a reply reads Accept or Decline by [date], and an accepted one play by [date].
On a test event, challenges and results are allowed outside the season's start and end dates, so the ladder can be tried out before it opens.
The league's people
People in League settings opens Everyone in the league: one list of everyone who plays in the ladder league, with email, phone and whether they sign in. It is the same list a team league has, without clubs or roles. A player added on a season's Players step gets a record here automatically, and clicking their name on Players opens it. Test players are not listed.
- + Add people takes one person a line, Name, email, checks the names against the WCF player list, and with Also put them on the [season] ladder (ticked by default) enters them on the season in play. Someone already on the list is skipped.
- Opening a person edits their name, email, phone and the Inactive tick. A change to the email or phone reaches every season they are on. Put on it / Take off enters them on, or withdraws them from, the season in play; their games stand.
- Delete… (type DELETE) is for someone added by mistake. A person with any ladder challenge or game stays; mark them inactive instead.
Below it, League access lists who can sign in to run or view the league: owner, manager, viewer. Players are not invited there: they use their own ladder link.
Results and moves
Every game, forfeit, lapse and organiser move, newest first, with who moved where. Undo on an organiser move removes it and rebuilds the board. Correct or strike off a result lists every result that counted, each with the organiser menu.
Emails
| When | Who |
|---|---|
| A challenge is made | The player challenged, with the league's Your note in challenge emails (see Ladder rules) |
| It is accepted or declined | The challenger |
| It is withdrawn | The player challenged |
| A day before a reply is due | The player challenged |
| A result counts | Both players, with the moves it made |
| A result waits for confirmation | The other player (or the organisers, when it broke a rule) |
| A result is flagged | The organisers |
| A deadline passes | Both players; the organisers too when they decide |
| A player drops for inactivity | That player |
Each email goes once. The sender reads League name via Croquet Tools. The league's logo, when one is set in League settings, sits in the email header; without one the header carries the Croquet Tools mark.
